A stream of highly charged particles from the sun is headed straight toward Earth, threatening to plunge cities around the world into darkness and bring the global economy screeching to a halt.

This isn’t the premise of the latest doomsday thriller. Massive solar storms have happened before — and another one is likely to occur soon, according to Mike Hapgood, a space weather scientist at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford, England.

Much of the planet’s electronic equipment, as well as orbiting satellites, have been built to withstand these periodic geomagnetic storms. But the world is still not prepared for a truly damaging solar storm, Hapgood argues in a recent commentary published in the journal Nature.

Hapgood talked with The Times about the potential effects of such a storm and how the world should prepare for it.

What exactly is a solar storm?

I find that’s hard to answer. The term “solar storm” has crept into our usage, but nobody has defined what it means. Whether a “solar storm” is happening on the sun or is referring to the effect on the Earth depends on who’s talking.

I prefer “space weather,” because it focuses our attention on the phenomena in space that travel from the sun to the Earth.

People often talk about solar flares and solar storms in the same breath. What’s the difference?

Solar flares mainly emit X-rays — we also get radio waves from these things, and white light in the brightest of flares. They all travel at the same speed as light, so it takes eight minutes to arrive. There are some effects from flares, such as radio interference from the radio bursts.

But that’s a pretty small-beer thing. The big thing is the geomagnetic storms [on Earth] that affect the power grid, and that’s caused by the coronal mass ejections [from the sun].

Coronal mass ejections are caused when the magnetic field in the sun’s atmosphere gets disrupted and then the plasma, the sun’s hot ionized gas, erupts and send charged particles into space. Think of it like a hurricane — is it headed toward us or not headed toward us? If we’re lucky, it misses us.

How are solar flares and coronal mass ejections related?

There’s an association between flares and coronal mass ejections, but it’s a relationship we don’t quite understand scientifically. Sometimes the CME launches before the flare occurs, and vice versa.

What happens when those particles reach Earth?

There can be a whole range of effects. The classic one everyone quotes is the effect on the power grid. A big geomagnetic storm can essentially put extra electric currents into the grid. If it gets bad enough, you can have a complete failure of the power grid — it happened in Quebec back in 1989. If you’ve got that, then you’ve just got to get it back on again. But you could also damage the transformers, which would make it much harder to get the electric power back.

How else could people be affected?

You get big disturbances in the Earth’s upper atmosphere — what we call the ionosphere — and that could be very disruptive to things like GPS [the network of global positioning system satellites]. Given the extent we use GPS in everyday life [including for cellphone networks, shipping safety and financial transaction records], that’s a big issue.

The storms can also disrupt communications on transoceanic flights. Sometimes when that happens, they will either divert or cancel flights. So that would be the like the disruption we had in Europe from the volcano two years ago, where they had to close down airspace for safety reasons.

Prophecy Sign:  Earthquakes in diverse places

The only section of the infamous Ring of Fire that hasn’t seen a major earthquake in the last few years is the North American west coast.  We’ve seen major earthquakes in Chile, (8.8), Indonesia, (9.2) and Japan, (9.0), so is North America next?  We wonder given the small swarms of recent earthquakes that are occurring up and down the fault lines of the west coast.

Experts say a “swarm” of small earthquakes off the northwest coast of Vancouver Island are part of the normal seismic activity in the area, and they could continue for several more days. A 4.0 magnitude earthquake that struck just after midnight on Tuesday morning was the eighth small quake with a magnitude between 3.8 and 4.7 to strike the region since April 22.  Pacific Geoscience Centre Seismologist Gary Rogers said the activity is focused along a 20-kilometre stretch along an area called the Raveer Delwood Fault, located about 200 kilometres offshore.

A little known prophecy from Isaiah chapter 17 verses 1-5 says that Damascus will become a ruinous heap and will cease to be a city. This prophecy has never been fulfilled as Damascus is the oldest continually inhabited city in the world.

The more Syria continues down its current course the fulfillment of the prophecy becomes even greater. Keep looking up!

Jordanian news site Ahbar Baladna reports that western spy satellites have recently spotted movements of Syrian heavy missile launchers northward and southward, toward Syria’s borders with Turkey and Israel.

The site says hundreds of high-caliber launchers are being moved, and that these could only be long range Scud missile launchers.

Syria has threatened in the past that in the event of foreign military intervention on its soil, it will not hesitate to fire missiles at Israel and Turkey in order to ignite a large scale regional war.

Turkish and French officials said ten days ago they were mulling a potential military intervention in Syria, where civil war has been raging for 14 months.

“In the face of developments in Syria, we are taking into consideration any kind of possibility in line with our national security and interests,” Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu told parliament during a briefing to lawmakers.

Volcanic activity is on the rise across the whole world. This is definitely one of the signs that Christ talked about in Matthew 24 and Luke 21. The sun will be darkened and not give her light. We are living in exciting times as the return of the Lord is at hand. Keep looking up!

Ecuador: Tungurahua Volcano Erupts Launching Gravel on Nearby Town

“Over the weekend, the Tungurahua’s volcanic eruption had a strong explosion that caused gravel to fall down in the nearby town of Pillate, Ecuador.

The explosion, characterized by its loud ‘cannon ball shot’, was immediately detected by locals and scientists observing the volcano’s progress. The explosion was later followed by a slight tremor and a constant pulsation of ‘high energy’ said reports.

The constant cloud coverage surrounding the volcano has caused scientists, from the Geophysical Institute branch of the National Polytechnic School to have trouble determining its current state. Most of the direct observations are conducted in the Guadalupe Observatory, the closest in the vicinity.”

Mexico preps shelters as volcano roars, spews

XALITZINTLA, Mexico -

The white-capped volcano that looms over Mexico City emitted a terrifying low-pitched roar Friday and spewed roiling towers of ash and steam as it vented the pressure built up by a massive chamber of magma beneath its slopes. Authorities prepared evacuation routes, ambulances and shelters in the event of a bigger explosion.

Even a large eruption of the 17,886-foot (5,450-meter) cone of Popocatepetl is unlikely to do more than dump ash on one of the world’s largest metropolitan areas. But the grit could play havoc with Mexico City’s busy airport, and tens of thousands of people in the farming villages on its flanks could be forced to flee.

Popo, as it’s commonly known, has put out small eruptions of ash almost daily since a round of eruptive activity began in 1994. A week ago, the eruptions started growing larger and authorities slightly elevated the alert level for people living nearby.

Before dawn on Friday, the mountain moved into what appeared to be a new level of activity, spitting out dozens of ash clouds and shot fragments of glowing rock down its slopes while frightening the residents of surrounding villages with deep roaring not heard in a decade.

People in the village of Xalitzintla said they were awakened by a window-rattling series of eruptions. Mexico’s National Disaster Prevention Center said one string of eruptions ended in the early morning, then the volcano started up again at 5:05 a.m., with at least 12 eruptions in two hours.

“Up on the mountain, it feels incredible,” said Aaron Sanchez Ocelotl, 45, who was in his turf grass fields when the eruptions happened. “It sounds like the roaring of the sea.”

A 35 million cubic foot (1 million cubic meter) chamber of magma is seething about six miles (8 to 10 kilometers) beneath Popocatepetl, Roberto Quaas, director of the disaster prevention center, said at a news conference laying out emergency preparations.

Scientists have no way of predicting whether the molten rock in the chamber will be slowly released, or erupt in a powerful explosion like one on Dec. 18, 2000, that sent up a plume of red-hot rock and forced the evacuation of thousands of people who live at the volcano’s base, Quaas said.

He compared the volcano to a bottle of champagne: “You could take the cork out quickly and all the gaseous material and liquid rushes out suddenly, or it could also happen slowly.”

However, he said, “we know that this lava dome, sooner or later, will be destroyed by internal pressure.”

Scientists have detected fracturing about 3.5 miles (5 to 6 kilometers) down, accompanied by small earthquakes measuring about 3.4 magnitude, he said.

An iconic backdrop to Mexico City’s skyline on clear days, Popocatepetl sits roughly halfway between Mexico City and the city of Puebla – meaning some 25 million people live within a 60-mile radius of the volcano, Quaas said.

“These are figures that obviously alarm and concern us,” he said.

President Felipe Calderon and the governors of Mexico, Puebla and Morelos states that neighbor Popocatepetl said on a live national television broadcast that they were keeping roads open around the mountain, preparing emergency shelters and making sure residents know the latest information about a potential eruption.

“It’s our obligation to stay alert, to stay on guard, so we can keep carefully following developments and have the opportunity to respond quickly, if needed, and efficiently, to whatever might happen,” Calderon said

Gregorio Fuentes Casquera, the assistant mayor of Xalitzintla, a village of 2,600 people about seven miles (12 kilometers) from the summit, said the town had prepared 50 buses and was sending out its six-member police forces to alert people to be ready to evacuate.

“Everyone needs to take this seriously. This buzzing, this roaring isn’t normal,” he said, adding that he believed about half the populace would be willing to evacuate, while the rest would want to stay.

As the quiet of the corn fields and fruit orchards was pervaded by the volcano’s spooky roaring, dozens of women lined up in Xalitzintla’s main square to get free face masks and bottles of water. Health authorities were giving out 10 masks and 10 bottles of water to each family, and the surgical-style masks, intended to filter out the fine ash released by the volcano, were becoming common among the town(asterisk)s students, who are required to wear them in school. Few adults wore them.

“Right now we’re not scared. When it’s scary is at night, when it’s putting out lava,” said Nancy Agustin Inclan, 14, as she removed her mask and took a break outside the gate of the town’s middle school.

Webcam images on the site of the National Disaster Prevention Center showed the plume rising from the top of the peak at dawn, though clouds obscured the volcano for people further away. The Televisa television network broadcast images of red, glowing material rising from the crater and falling on its slopes.

The ash was blowing to the northeast, in the general direction of Puebla.

The recent round of eruptions ended a period of decades in which the volcano named after a legendary Indian warrior was seen as peaceful, sleeping giant, and a tourism attraction.

Homero Aridjis, a Mexican poet who has written about Popocatepetl and the sharper-edged neighboring Iztaccihuatl, named for the warrior’s mythical lover, said people ascribed deep significance to the volcano’s eruptions.

He noted that the last times Popo, also known as Don Goyo, had major activity were in 1994 and 2000, both presidential election years like this one, and some believed he was angry at the choice of candidates.

For others in Mexico, the eruption and a series of recent strong earthquakes are fueling speculation about what some believe to be a Mayan prophecy that the world will end in 2012.

” Popo is a godlike figure,” Aridjis said. “Like the Japanese with Mount Fuji … a natural presence, a historical one, a figure of legend.”

David Gorzo Navarro, a 45-year-old street vendor in Huejotzingo, said even if there was a major eruption, people wouldn’t leave.

“The people will bring mole to Don Goyo,” he said. “Every year we bring an offering and today we’re going to do it even earlier.”

“I’m not afraid. He’s my uncle,” said Oscar Olate, expressing the personal relationship many in the Mexico Valley feel toward Popocatepetl, whose name means “smoking mountain” in the indigenous Nahuatl language of the Aztecs.

Greece: Volcano Behind Atlantis Legend Reawakens, Land Near Volcano Swelling At An Accelerating Rate

The cataclysmic eruptions at the Greek isle of Santorini about 3,600 years ago that spewed forth about 9.5 to 14.3 cubic miles (40 to 60 cubic kilometers) of lava devastated the ancient seafaring Minoan civilization, potentially inspiring the legend of the lost city of Atlantis. From the air, the resulting caldera, or volcanic crater, appears as a small cluster within the larger collection of Greek islands in the Aegean Sea.

Over the next four millennia, the largely underwater caldera at Santorini has experienced a series of smaller eruptions, with five such outbursts in the past 600 years, ending most recently in 1950. After a 60-year lull, Santorini awakened in January 2011 with a swarm of tremors, each magnitude 3.2 or less, new GPS research has revealed.

Magma on the move

Investigators had installed a GPS monitoring system in the area in 2006. These sensors keep track of their location in space, and can thus shed light on when the Earth is moving.

The scientists found that by June 2011, the 22 GPS stations had been pushed 0.2 to 1.3 inches (5 to 32 millimeters) farther from the caldera than they had been just six months earlier. The researchers then improved the existing GPS stations and installed two more GPS stations, and data from September 2011 to January 2012 showed the land near the volcano was swelling at an accelerating rate …”

A top Damascus official has told WND the Turkish military has begun calling up reserves for a potential armed confrontation with Syria.

The claim could not be immediately independently verified by U.S., French or Egyptian sources, but the purported move comes at the same time a United Nations resolution calls for unspecific “swift and meaningful consequences” if Syria continues to flout a U.N.-brokered truce with protesters.

Over the weekend, Iranian official Ali Larijani said countries that seek to stoke the crisis in Syria will be “engulfed by its fire.” With obvious reference to Turkey and the international community, Larija warned unnamed countries against waging war on Syria, saying a confrontation is like playing with “gunpowder.”

A reported 300 unarmed U.N. observers have begun arriving in Syria as part of the cease-fire agreement. Eight monitors are already in Syria, and a further two are expected to arrive today as part of the advance team agreed to in U.N. envoy Kofi Annan’s six-point strategy, which calls for an end to the violence and a flow of humanitarian assistance.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice acknowledged the challenges for the observers.

”They are going to be dependent for security on the very government [that] is responsible for the main security threats,” she said. ”They are going to be deployed in the midst of protesters who are desperate for a protection that the monitors are not equipped or mandated to provide. And they will be deployed in numbers too small to cover the entire country but large enough to give rise to expectations that will be impossible to meet if the Syrian government does not fulfill its commitments.”

Official: Turkey wants NATO to attack Syria

Last week, a Syrian official claimed to WND that Turkey had asked the Syrian opposition to ignore the truce and continue its assault against President Bashar al-Assad’s embattled regime.

Also last week, WND reported the Syrian military is on its second-highest alert level, believing Turkey may be attempting to stage a provocation in the hope of drawing Damascus into a conflict, according to a top Syrian official.

The official said Syria noted unusual Turkish troop movements in recent days along the Syria-Turkey border.

Turkey claimed the movement was to guard refugees coming into the country from war-torn areas of Syria. The Syrian official, however, said Damascus believes Turkey may be trying to “surprise” Syria with some sort of provocation.

Let’s read exactly what Apostle John saw in the drama of Revelation. “And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.” (Revelation 6:12-14) The frequency of earthquakes has grown so overwhelming, those that study this realm are alarmed. According to a report in Ready Ready News there have been 49 volcano eruptions so far in 2012. Here is their report entitled, “The 49th volcano erupts in 2012: Ecuador’s Sangay volcano unleashes 2 km ash cloud During an over-flight on April 13, an explosion from Sangay volcano was observed at 08:25 local time. It generated an ash and steam column of 2 km above the summit crater. (Rapture Ready News, 04/15/12) The sun becoming as black as sackcloth is one of the results of volcanoes.

To add to our understanding of what is occurring we must consider the unnatural things happening with our sun. Here is a report from Space.com. This event was on Monday of this week. “The sun erupted in an amazing solar flare today (April 16), unleashing an intense eruption of super-heated plasma that arced high above the star’s surface before blasting out into space. The powerful solar flare occurred at 1:45 p.m. EDT (1745 GMT) and registered as a moderate M1.7-class on the scale of sun storms, placing it firmly in the middle of the scale used by scientists to measure flare strength. The storm is not the strongest this year from the sun, but photos and video of the solar flare captured by NASA spacecraft revealed it to be an eye-popping display of magnetic plasma.” When will the sun actually refuse to shine? We will need to leave it to the Creator.

God’s perfect Word has declared, “. . . for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.” (Isaiah 26:9) The blindness of the Western World to holy things and the arrogance about any possible judgment by God is a dark crisis. It cannot last. God will either act or His reputation is on the line. Please, do not question the fact that the great Sovereign God is preparing for His visitation. The Word of God has already spoken. The Holy Ghost anointed Apostle Peter to speak of our day as he preached the “Pentecost Celebration” sermon. It is clear that Peter was addressing the entire church dispensation from that day to our day. If there is a chapter in the Bible that should be a clarion call to the church world, this is it. The church of Jesus Christ was inaugurated at Pentecost and the Holy Spirit did not fail to announce the closing hour.

Peter spoke very passionately of these last days concerning the kingdom of God on earth, “And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Acts 2:17-21) He used a Greek word for “last-eschatos” and the meaning is “most remote,” “extreme,” or the “last of the last.” It is evident that we are there.

The things about to happen are going to shake this world to its very soul. Imagine about 1:30 on a sunny afternoon when the sun simply goes out, and our world turns dark as midnight. Nothing in natural science or nature will be identified as an ordinary cause. The scientists who study the atmosphere are quickly brought into the newsroom, but they can only say, “This is unexpected, we have no answers.” Not only will the darkness startle people but the deep spiritual emotions that follow such an act by God will be even more troubling. The emotions that followed 9/11 will pale to compare. Animals will seek a hiding place, chickens will go to roost, and dogs will howl with dread.

This eclipse of the sun may well be followed by the moon turning blood red and trailing the sky with what appears to be a blood bath. The tint of blood will suddenly leave the entire heavenlies with an awe inspiring gloom. Wicked people will curse at the heavens and drown themselves in intoxicants. The Bible has promised that this coming judgment will be so overwhelming to the unprepared multitudes that, “Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.” (Luke 21:26) Our present moon is the heavenly body that determines the tides of the oceans. When the moon starts to convulse the earthly water tables will follow suit. The Son of God told us this would occur. “And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring.” (Luke 21:25) The East and West coasts of America will certainly experience tsunamis that will devastate entire major cities. We are talking about a time when the supreme powers of the heavens will no longer be a subject for jest and debate. Atheists will either curse and swear or turn to prayer. There will no longer be a middle ground between believers and unbelievers.

Apostle Peter spoke of things that will occur as almost impossible to understand in advance. An eclipse of the sun and the moon turning to blood is only part of what the Christian world may face as we await the Rapture. He spoke of “signs in the earth beneath, blood and fire and vapor of smoke.” We are speaking of indescribable events. Natural phenomena can cause some of this, but the world often explains them as the results of nature. I believe these will be so unexpected and unexplainable that the Sovereign God must be acknowledged. While the Seven Years of the Great Tribulation cannot begin until the Rapture, preludes to those seven years will certainly happen.

A multitude of the honest hearted will finally refuse the lies of Bible critics and start giving glory to God. As soon as the moon turns to blood, millions will turn to God. When the Sun goes out or God covers it with His hand, and when the light comes back on, church altars will once again become the mourner’s bench. The Holy Ghost speaking by Peter at Pentecost did not fail to give us the effect of these Heavenly manifestations. None of these actions will be wasted. God is going to prepare this universe for both revival and His final redemption. As He concluded this explanation of judgments, the Spirit said, “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Acts 2:21)

To add to the truth of this drama seen by Apostle John we need to remember the concern of the Environmentalist. Since I started this article I have learned that this Sunday is “Earth Day”. I can understand their concerns. When you disregard the Bible and what is prophesied to happen then they are deeply afraid. They are mobilizing to save the earth. Here is their theme as printed on one of their sites. “Our planet, our home is being neglected. Climate change continues unabated. It seems there’s a new ecological disaster happening almost daily. This Earth Day it’s time to mobilize the planet from the ground up to send a message that the Earth won’t wait!” (Mobilize The Earth) It’s sad to think of so many people in utter darkness.

The disasters that will occur will only darken the thinking of these dear people unless somehow we reach them for Christ. Everything we have spoken of from the Bible will occur either before or after the Rapture. The Apostle was speaking to the multitude in Jerusalem and to the church. This could well mean that any portion of coming judgment may occur at any moment. We are foolish if we do not live ready to go in the Rapture or ready to reap a harvest as our Lord shakes this world to its senses. I pray that He will send this shakening before He raptures His Church for the sake of the lost.

A leading earthquake scientist has warned that the planet could be cracking up after a series of massive quakes in just 48 hours.

Expert Gheorghe Marmureanu – from Romania’s National Institute of Earth Physics – says 39 quakes had hit the globe within two days.

The series started with two massive quakes in Indonesia measuring 8.6 and 8.2 on the Richter scale rapidly followed by three more only slightly smaller in Mexico within hours.

‘There is no doubt that something is seriously wrong. There have been too many strong earthquakes,’ said Marmureanu.

He added: ‘The quakes are a surprise that cannot be easily explained by current scientific knowledge. With the Indonesian quake for example, statistically, there should be one big earthquake in this part of Asia every 500 years. However, since 2004, there were already three quakes with a magnitude of over 8, which is not normal.”
